Reveal, Ink on vintage tablecloth, 2020, 52 x 47

Reveal is from my series of ink-wash drawings on vintage tablecloths, handkerchiefs, and napkins (three additional images are included from the series). As free-hanging pieces, these linens still maintain their identities as utilitarian objects from a traditionally domestic female world.
Hands, a long-time focus of my art, stand in for the self in my sculptures and drawings. Meanings change as the hands gesture release, acceptance, and other associated states of being. I have a ritual during hard times. I stand by the Winooski River (where I live in Vermont) looking downstream and focus on letting difficulties flow away. Then I face upstream and focus on opening up to receive the future.
My love for theatre, puppetry, drapery, and mystery is reflected in the composition of Reveal.
